"Got invited to my ex’s sister’s wedding, they asked me to pay for [my] dinner."

Not even kidding. Got this fancy- a invitation to my ex's sister's wedding. We broke up chill, so I figured, why not show up, be civil.

I open the invite and near the bottom it says: "We kindly ask guests to contribute 75 USD per plate. Payments via Venmo."

...EXCUSE ME? Am I getting married too? Is the pasta made of Diamonds?

It gets worse. The dress code looked like a government mandate:

× No white, okay, fair. X No black, "too depr_ing." X No red, "too attention seeking." X Ladies must wear dresses. Not too short. Not too tight. X Men: No jeans, no sneakers, no brown shoes.

So basically, be stylish but invisible. I sent them a thumbs up emoji and stayed home eating pizza in my pajamas. Felt like a king.

JustALizzyLife. I'm one of the girliest girls. ever. I love pink and glitter and getting dressed up. That said, you do not get to insist I ever wear a dress.

You can ask for formal, casual, beach wear, whatever, but you do not get to force women into your stereotype of what a woman
  • 12
is supposed to look like or dress like. You could be my best friend on the planet, I could be planning on wearing a dress, but the moment you try to dictate
  • 13
that all guests that identify as a woman have to wear a dress, I'm declining the invite.

meepgorp Dear Brides, 1. you don't get a dress code. You get a formality level.
  • 15
    2. the reception is a party YOU give to your guests. It is not a fundraiser, no one owes you anything for it, even a gift. People come to weddings to witness the marriage

from times before there were Departments of Vital Records or airplanes, meaning they usually traveled great distances to be there.

YOU and YOUR FAMILY throw a party to thank them. Asking for money - any amount- is 100% tacky in every situation. Gift registries are to help people select a gift IF
  • 18
THEY CHOOSE to bring one and if they choose to use it - it's not required to bring a gift (although it is very poor manners) and certainly not that gifts must be from your registry. If you don't want gifts, add a charity or two.
